Cut and shape diamonds have taken on the same meaning and this is not strictly correct.

There are many different shape diamonds however just two cuts:

brilliant cut and step cut.

Shapes with step cut:

Emerald Cut, Asscher Cut, Baguette and Trapezoid.

Shapes with brilliant cut:

Round, Oval, Cushion, Pear, Marquise, Princess, Radiant, Heart.

Selecting a particular shape is a personal choice and cut properly each one has its own distinct charm and brilliance.

Provided the rough diamond is a beautiful clear bright crystal, the brilliance of a diamond ultimately lies in the hands of the cutter.

The temptation to cut a heavier diamond rather than remove as much weight as necessary to produce the most brilliant stone is the biggest challenge facing all diamond manufacturers.

Cut properly a diamond draws light into the stone from the top and reflects it back with brilliance unequalled in nature. Cut improperly however, light is not captured or reflected efficiently and the result is a less brilliant and less valuable diamond.

Q: Why are all diamonds not cut perfectly?

A: The market-place is driven by weight and cutters have financial incentive to produce heavier rather than more perfectly cut diamonds.
