How to Buy a Cushion Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

First developed in the early 1900′s, the Cushion Cut diamond shape has soared in popularity over the past decade.  The modern day cushion is a descendant of the Old Mine Cut.  When cut properly, a Cushion Cut diamond can be breathtaking … it’s rounded corners and 58 brilliant-style facets working together to create a soft, pillow-like shape.

Selecting a truly beautiful Cushion Cut diamond should require the assistance of an expert in the diamond industry, as a lot of these shapes tend to be asymmetrical or carry too much weight underneath the stone.  Whereas a Round Brilliant diamond has a lot of science behind the ‘proper’ depth and table ratios, a Cushion Cut diamond is more of a 50/50 mixture of science and art.  Each Cushion Cut diamond has it’s own personality with some being more ‘pillowy’ on top, softer or more-pronounced in the corners, varying table size, etc.  Overall, the talent of the cutter is the #1 factor behind the brilliance and beauty of the diamond.

There are many factors that should be considered when purchasing a Cushion Cut diamond and they ALL boil down to one thing –  there is ALWAYS a reason for every price.

2.01 Carat Cushion Diamond Comparison

2.01 Carat Cushion Diamond Comparison

Here is a recent example that we worked on … a client was looking at another diamond wholesaler’s 2.09 carat Cushion Cut diamond that measured 7.60 x 7.35 mm with a depth of 68.8%.  At first, he was excited about being able to buy a weight of over 2.00 carats as the center diamond in his girlfriend’s diamond engagement ring.  What he quickly learned through our education was that these measurements and depth percentage make for a small Cushion Cut diamond.   In fact, that 2.09 stone was noticeable smaller that our 1.90 carat, which measured 8.05 x 7.18 mm and had a depth of 65.9%.  Not only did our client end up getting a larger diamond in terms of the ‘spread’ or ‘look’ of the stone, but he saved money too.

Another factor to consider are ‘cut grades’ on Cushion Cut diamond certificates.  It is our opinion that cut grades on certificates for Cushion Cut diamonds should NOT be factored into exactly how beautiful the stone will appear to the naked eye.  Often times a polish-symmetry of Good-Good can be more brilliant that an Excellent-Excellent.  This is just another reason why it is so important to be guided by a true industry expert while selecting your diamond.

Right Hand Rings… Hear Me Roar!

Raise your right hand if you deserve a little self-indulgence!  There is no reason to wait for your significant other to put a diamond ring on your finger… celebrate your independence and do it yourself.  You work hard, take care of everyone around you and, now, you deserve to show off with a little ‘right hand bling.’  Every time you look down at your embellished right hand you’ll feel the satisfaction of knowing you’ve done something just for you!

The world’s largest diamond producer, DeBeers, has promoted this sentiment with taglines like “Your left hand lives for love, Your right hand lives for the moment” and “Your left hand declares your commitment, Your right hand is a declaration of your independence.” Although this may just seem like great marketing, we’ve seen an increasing number of women eager to adorn their right hand because they simply feel they deserve it!  Many get so excited about this gift of self-love they opt to custom design a ring to perfectly reflect their personality, a process Ascot Diamonds specializes in.

The trend towards right hand rings has become increasingly popular as divorced women looked for options other than banishing their old engagement rings to the bottom of their jewelry boxes.  Instead, clients like Coca-Cola Worldwide Media & Communications Director Sarah A. brought in her rings and turned them into a new memory symbolizing her new-found freedom and independence.  After all, just because you’re single or divorced shouldn’t mean that you don’t get to wear a diamond ring, right?!

Ring we Created Using Client's Diamonds

With gold and diamond prices on the rise there has never been a better time to resurrect those rings, re-use some of your existing gemstones, let us refine the metal and emerge with something fresh in celebration of you.

Of course, right hand rings aren’t reserved for only the single ladies out there… they are also great gifts to symbolize the love, appreciation and respect you have for your significant other.

So what are some of the most popular ideas for right hand rings?  Colored diamonds in canary yellow, champagne, pale pink or deep black are among the most appealing as color easily expresses personality.

Many choose an ornate, diamond encrusted center band they can stack with black, yellow or pink diamond bands depending on their mood.  In this way they become a gift that keeps on giving as they add on over the years.

How to avoid diamond scams…

Do your research, read reviews and work with a jeweler you can trust.

We recently had a client who called to cancel an appointment because he thought he found an ‘exceptional deal’ somewhere else.  With so many retail stores going out of business or struggling to stay afloat, it certainly can appear as though there are ‘deals’ out there.  Our client was tempted to buy a diamond strictly based off the prospect of a bargain.  After speaking with him for a while, we convinced him that it couldn’t hurt to keep his appointment with Ascot.  We ended up comparing his ‘deal diamond’ to a few from our inventory and he quickly realized that the ‘deal diamond’ now seemed lifeless and dull in comparison.  We then examined the measurements of the other stone, and immediately knew that the diamond was improperly cut, thus accounting for the lifeless appearance.

In addition, the 1.51 carat ‘deal diamond’ had strong blue fluorescence (which can make the diamond appear milky and dull), and it was visibly smaller than our own 1.40 carat cushion.  Even in times like these, the golden rule of buying a diamond remains the same - there is always a reason for every price and it is very important to work with someone you can trust. Here is a great example… both of the diamonds below are cushion cut diamonds and weigh 2.01 carats.  The one on the left is a diamond from our inventory and the one on the right was a borrowed stone.  Notice how much smaller the diamond on the right looks… this diamond (like most on the market) was cut for weight, resulting in a small table and too much weight being left underneath.  Not only that, but the symmetry is off and the culet is not in the center of the stone.  Because of these factors, light will not reflect correctly and there will be significantly less fire and brilliance from the diamond on the right.

Another great example: below are two round brilliant cut diamonds, both graded as an I in color.  Do they look the same to you?!

Supposed "I" colored diamonds

Not a day goes by when we don’t see two diamonds that seemingly look the same on paper (even on GIA certificates) but have vastly different values due to factors like the ones described above.  Again, there is always a reason for this difference in value.

In the end, our client purchased his diamond from Ascot and even followed up with a long thank you note for the education he received and overall experience.  Our business is still growing strong while many others are closing their doors and there is a reason for that too!

How Do You Define Luxury?

Everyone has their own definition of luxury. It may be a bike ride down the Tuscan countryside, a day at the spa, a fast ride on a beautiful day… in a PORSCHE, the feel good factor of wearing a new watch, or fabulous, glorious DIAMONDS! Typically, luxury is a combination of a product and an experience so our goal at Ascot is to provide the best of both, which is something many jewelers forget. Quite simply, we believe you deserve a “luxury experience” because buying hand-crafted diamond jewelry should make you feel good.

Warning Guys…don’t be tempted by synthetic diamonds or Cubic Zirconia…

CZ vs. Diamonds

Be authentic. Buy Real.

True story… we know a guy who wanted to impress his lady with a gigantic diamond. He told her he made much more money than he actually did. He asked about synthetic diamonds and CZs (aka diamond cut glass) and we didn’t pass judgment and explained the difference between the two.

Moissanite, made from silicon carbide, is created in a machine that mimics the environment where diamonds grow. Instead of forming naturally in the Earth over millions of years, they are developed in pressurized containers in a matter of days. A manufactured stone is not nearly as alluring in my opinion and they’re expensive enough that consumers may as well buy a much more valuable, natural diamond.

In the doghouse? We can help get you out…

Catherine Ryder right hand diamond bands, custom pave diamond necklace & bracelet for Ascot Diamonds

There are varying degrees of severity on the “doghouse” scale and of course everyone is different but here are some general guidelines to help determine where you may fall.

Not calling to let your girl know you’re running thirty minutes late for dinner is about a 2 on the doghouse scale…not telling her you are going to be twelve hours late coming home from a guy’s night out and neglecting to answer her calls all night ranks around 7. Commit other offenses such as playing golf all day on your anniversary or forgetting a birthday (8), buying an outfit two sizes too big (4) or complimenting her girlfriend’s attributes too much (5) and you will likely want to make amends.

Gifts are meant to excite the receiver or have thought behind them and while a vacuum cleaner may not rank you too terribly on the list (maybe a 2), you probably aren’t going to get the kind of reaction jewelry will get you. Honestly giving a woman anything for cleaning or organizing is like giving them a chore instead of something for them to enjoy… Listen carefully men… jewelry is most always a surefire way to make your lady happy and in the end doesn’t that make you happy?

Okay, so here are our suggestions based on your particular indiscretion. Make sure you understand where you land on the “doghouse” severity scale and act accordingly.

Anything in the 1-3 range… mild indiscretions, not showing appreciation, etc. really only requires putting a little thought into the item. Maybe a personalized pendant, something featuring her birthstone, a sentimental charm… we are skilled at making you look like you put a lot of thought into it.

Once you skip to the 4-6 range a little more is required to get you off the sofa and back into her arms. A second wedding band is sentimental and something she will likely love or maybe she would like a necklace she can wear every day.

Diamond Necklace

If you land between 7-9 then you may be close to the point of no return and finding something that really suits her personality is a good idea. Let her know you are REALLY sorry with an ornate right hand ring or diamond studs.

If you hit 10, unfortunately size does matter………. UPGRADE her diamond or buy her a really big one.

Infatuation With Color

Diamonds of every color… Tickle me pink, give me a splash of sunshine, a celebration with champagne or an edge with black…either way I am completely smitten. Let’s be real. Rarity impresses everyone. Most people want what others covet. It makes us feel special to have something nobody we know has and probably never will, considering only .01% of all natural diamonds mined on Earth are colored. Rarity peaks interest and typically people enjoy being interesting.

Green-Diamond

Our fashion sense and choice of accessories are windows into our personalities. Just as colored diamonds often occur from varying reflections of light, different colors represent something unique to everyone. While some prefer to reflect the traditional, classic and timeless (of which we certainly have plenty), we’ve seen an increasing number of clients nurturing their innate girliness with pink, showing off their sophistication with champagne and cognac, drama with black, or individuality with green and brilliant yellow diamonds. Most like combining the traditional fine white diamonds with the non-traditional.

It comes as no surprise that many celebrities choose colored diamonds, considering much of Hollywood is about showing off what seems unattainable to the rest of the universe. Of course if your net worth is $200 million and your name is Mariah Carey you certainly CAN attain both a pink diamond and sapphire right hand “pop” and a 17 carat pink diamond engagement ring (said to be worth $2.5 million). Stars like Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum and Pamela Anderson prefer the sunny side with 9+ canary yellows, while Kim Kardashian and Lea Michelle walked the red carpet this year dripping in varying hues of champagne ice.

Diamond NecklaceColored diamonds though more rare don’t have to be only for the copiously rich and mega famous. Of course when they are as substantial as most celebrities prefer the price tag follows suit. But the good news if you’re interested in showing off your personality with a colored diamond is that you are reading this blog. Luckily you found us at Ascot Diamonds. Now I am not trying to shamelessly promote the company I represent…I’m being honest. We literally have connections to most every diamond vendor in the world and are one of the only jewelers out there invited to purchase directly from De beers. We aren’t interested in hammering clients with inflated prices like some or misrepresenting ourselves like others who are most definitely not “your friend in the diamond business.”

Pink Diamond Ring

Working in an office like ours for several years often makes us forget that most people don’t get to loupe a 20+ carat internally flawless, intense yellow diamond like I did last week or watch master jewelers carefully craft pieces showcasing diamonds from pumpkin orange to champagne, olive green, canary yellow, black or vivid pink. But being around the stunning and extremely rare is part of our daily lives at Ascot. Even still, every time I see a colored diamond no matter the hue, I am completely mesmerized. Each and every one is different and the individuality behind each one is worthy of infatuation…

Have you ever found a diamond that turned out to be real?

One of my favorite stories while working as a private jeweler with Ascot was with a wonderful couple, Melanie and Daniel. Our first meeting was all three of us because he wanted to be sure he selected a ring Melanie would love for years to come. When they walked in to tour the office they both loved being able to watch our master jewelers at work in the shop, were in awe of the pieces in our showroom and were just generally giddy and excited to be looking at rings. I love working with clients with the kind of energy they had! Once we sat down and I got a feel for Melanie’s taste (which was very similar to my own) I started to pull some of my favorite settings. She wanted something she would never grow sick of but something different than she was used to seeing. She appreciated our craftsmanship and artistic details and fell in love with the ring below.

Diamond Engagement Ring

Diamond Engagement Ring

Daniel wanted to be able to buy her a high quality diamond that was at least a carat and get her the setting she loved but wasn’t sure he could do everything at once. I suggested he purchase the setting and a lower quality diamond and upgrade down the road but he really didn’t want to compromise.

He set his second appointment alone to go over options and had a diamond ring with him he was sure contained a Cubic Zirconia. After glancing at the diamond I was almost positive it was real but didn’t want to get his hopes up until I looked through a diamond loupe. Sure enough it was not only real, but an exceptional quality, VS clarity diamond with an excellent cut and outstanding brilliance. I couldn’t wait to tell him because I knew he was disappointed thinking about sacrificing on the engagement ring for Melanie. When I delivered the news he looked at me and just kept repeating “no way, NO WAY!”, “another jeweler told me it was fake!”, “stuff like this never happens to me!” His excitement was infectious! And even though he probably would never admit it his eyes welled up and honestly mine did too. I knew how important it was to him that he give her everything she wanted and now he could.

He proceeded to tell me he had been saving the diamond for 5 years. Daniel worked as a waiter at a local restaurant and had plans with friends after work one night so he was rushing his closing duties. His boss told him he couldn’t leave until he swept the patio, a task he hated. Frustrated, he began sweeping and noticed something sparkling behind one of the tables. He picked up the ring with little excitement, assuming it was fake. His boss told him if nobody came to claim it within a month it was his. Obviously nobody ever came! Now he knows that the annoying task he tried to get out of led to the perfect ring for his love.

Melanie and Daniel are getting married this weekend…Congrats and may you have a lifetime filled with luck and love!
